Blogging for Appalachia - YOU HAVE A VOICE
Use it….

Being a part of an online community sometimes opens your eyes to issues that are happening in someone else’s backyard that aren’t happening in your own. Serious issues that need serious attention. One of those issues is the Mountaintop removal that is devastating hundreds of square miles of Appalachia. Denny at The Backwoods Drifter is asking for our support with this crusade. The Outdoor Bloggers Summit has also challenged those who would like to help spread the word, to write about it this week, February 4-8, 2008.
If you are unfamiliar with Mountaintop Removal, as I was, this is a great link to an eight minute video that will show you the devastating impact Mountaintop Removal truly is.
ilovemountains.org - has videos and other great information.
WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP:
- Follow the links I have listed to learn about Mountaintop Removal.
- Write a post about Mountaintop Removal. Feel free to use any links I’ve provided.
- Write your representation and ask him/her to co-sponsor the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R. 2169 in the 110th Congress). Albert at The Rasch Outdoors Chronicles wrote a very helpful piece called “Taking it to the House”. In his article he helps you find your 9 digit zip code, which will help you find your state representative. He also has listed instructions on how to write and provides a sample letter for you to use. This all can be done online.
- E-mail your family and friends to help spread the word.
This is not something happening in my backyard. I had never heard about it until I read it on Denny’s blog. I am shocked that this type of destruction is not a major story on our major networks.
But we have our own voice and it is our responsibility to carry our voice.
Please take part in the ongoing effort to stop Mountaintop Removal.

Great post! The more people we can introduce to this subject and educate about what mountaintop removal is and the harm it causes, the closer we’ll be to stopping it.
I’m with you, I’m amazed we don’t hear more about this in the mainstream media. It just goes to show that you can’t always depend on others to spread the word about environmental destruction.
Thanks for participating in the Challenge.

I’d love to hear someone ask our Presidential “hopefuls” how they feel about MTR.
Thank you!
