Do You Have A Nickname
My Dad has always had a nickname for everyone. Some names were associated with certain situations and other names were from who knows. Some of us even have several nicknames. Let’s take a look:
My oldest brother: Hairbone (I remember my brothers friends all have nicknames and they still use them to this day. If I see one of their friends around town they will say “Hey, hows Hairbone doing?”
My other oldest brother: Sambo, B.B.
My older sister: Cat (Our names all start with J except her. Her first name is Catherine and her middle name is Jane which is what we all refer to her as. My Dad uses her first name or Cat. Behind her back she is Queen B.)
My younger sister: Pook (She use to play peek-a-boo and would say pook-a-boo.)
My niece: Uggie (She had a really ugly doll she use to call Uggie so that is what my Dad calls her.)
My nephew: JW (First and middle initials.)
My other niece: Gabbie (She talks and talks and talks and is probably still talking.)
As for me, I have several:
- Jojo: (My niece’s first words - Mama, Dada, Jojo. All the kids call me this.)
- Jo or Jod: (What my friends call me or my Dad.)
- Parkave: (My brothers call me this.)
- Joho: (My niece & nephew named their dog Jojo so as my nephew got older he started calling me Joho.)
- Skeeter: (Don’t ask - but I think someone use to call me that.)
- The B Word: (Yes, unfortunately this is what my sister calls me.)
How about you? Do you have a nickname and where did you get it from? I would love, love, love to hear all of your nicknames or maybe a friend or family member has a cute or funny one you would like share.

Wow….okay I guess I will share it. My grandma and an Aunt used to call me punky all the time.
I found out later that they called me that because they were unhappy with my first name. Arthur is my grandfathers name on the other side of the family and they were unhappy that my parents called me that and called me a nickname instead.
Isn’t that crazy. When I finally found out I yelled at them for it. They did eventually get over it though.
There’s my story!

Growing up we didn’t really have many nicknames - my Dad always said I named you what I named you so that I could call you that. However until I turned 21 or so I couldn’t gain weight if I wanted to (now I can’t loose weight… maybe I need to try harder) anyway I was really skinny and on the taller side of average so I was called string bean or french fry on occasion.
I have a name that is easily shortened and a lot of my friends use the shortened version of my name
My husband on the other hand called me Doll or Dolly until we had been married for about a year now I’m Squirrel, Buckless, or Bucky and I’m sure that before we’ve been married another 9 years I’ll have a bunch more nicknames too.
We call our daughter “tater” or “taterbug” the bug comes from my husbands nickname - he’s my “loverbug” sometimes we call her sweetness, sugar or darling.
I use “Blessed” as my screen name because there was a really stressful really awful period of time in my life before I got married and when people would ask “how are you” they really didn’t want the answer so I started replying “I’m Blessed” and now I still like that reply and I still use it.

Good post and thanks for sharing! Our family hasn’t really gotten into the nickname thing - although I was called mostly by my full first and middle name growing up - Tommy Joe or TJ.
In highschool I was “squeekers” and “mouseketeer” Apparently, my small head and outward protruding ears give me an appearance of a mouse! Needless to say, I was not especially fond of those nicknames! Baseball teammates called me T-Bone - that one sounded much better in my opinion…alas, none of them stuck, so now, I’m simply Tom. How boring, huh?

Arthur - punky is cute!
Blessed - seems so appropriate for you and I love taterbug.
Rex - we would like to ask - please share the details.
Tom - I like them both - Tommy Joe and TJ
Marky - I’ve never heard of Dood - does it have to do with your middle or last name?

nope
Dood was just a name they gave me.. no particular reason.. even they don’t know why..

Cannibal - my on-air name when I did the hardcore/punk rock show (1990,91) on WFIT, the Florida Tech University radio station in Melbourne, FL, and many people only knew me as that for many years.
Hunt - my last name, used by many of my friends. Not sure if some of them even remember my first name.
Jeffrey - my whole family calls me this. I tried to break them of it many years ago, but it was no use. My wife also uses it, but her tone normally sounds different, like “Jeffrey! Did you leave those dirty dishes in the sink?”

Jeff - that is funny!
One thing I didn’t include - Marks Mom calls him Marky and his older brother sometimes calls him Marko. I will use his first and middle name…”Mark Allen it’s 5:00 a.m. and against the city ordinance to cut grass right now.”

Gedgie - Short for Mrs. Lawdredge which was one of my older siblings teachers when I was born. They still call my this.
Dos - Again, older sister and brother gave me this name when I was a baby and they were in high school. I’m guessing it was when they had a party at our house and instead of using my name they referred to me as Dos and in numero 2.

I always use my full first name. I used to be Kristi when I was a kid, but when I got older, I thought Kristine sounded more grown up. I’ve gradually trained most of my family and friends to call me that.

I get Hughes from my husband and his cousin, and possibly a few more people, but I don’t really notice. My husband uses it mostly in competitive situations (imagine it with an exclamation point: Hughes!), but Cousin Bob uses it all the time. In fact, I’m not sure if he ever calls me Haley.
