OBS Challenge - City of Hammond, IN
The Outdoor Blogger’s Summit has issued a write about the good challenge this week. The challenge is to write about the good that hunters, anglers and conservationist do. The post could be about an organization, a person or an experience. I’ve chosen the City of Hammond, Indiana and the good they do for their local youths.
One event each year hosted by the City of Hammond is their summer festival. They have many activities for kids including a kids fishing derby. This is sponsored by the City of Hammond and co-sponsored by Mik Lurch Fishing Tackle Outlet and the Hammond Optimist Youth Group.
Last year over 270 kids participated in the fishing derby and each child was given a rod and reel combination. Trophies are given to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in several different fishing categories along with many great prizes. My husband, Mark, is one of the organizers for the derby and I know the kids always have a great time. I hope to attend this year and get lots of pictures so I can show how nice it always turns out.
I would also like to mention that at the City of Hammonds last Sport’s Show there was a minnow pond setup for racing and all proceeds were donated to the local Walleye Program. This was for the restocking of Walleye in one of our local lakes, Wolf Lake.
There are so many great programs out there but it is nice to see a city that does as much as they do for the youths in their community.
**Please note: I will be posting over the weekend so check back tomorrow morning for my Goofy Googler.**

That’s a very cool thing to spotlight. I think sometimes we forget how much a city or town can encourage or discourage outdoor activity. Great post.

It’s great that you and Mark are able to be involved in a program like that sponsored by your city! Great post.

Wow that’s awsome that they each got a rod and reel. I’m not sure what they do at the Fort Wayne, In derby each year. I’ll have to check it out this year.

What a great post and what a great city. Good to hear that a city is still providing entertainment such as this. Good stuff!
