Riding In Cars With Hunters
When I first started dating my hunter I could never figure out the excitement of seeing a deer in an open field while driving. Over the years and many car/truck rides later we’ve seen many deer. Well I should say he has. By the time he about whacks my head off with his arm to point out a deer, it’s already out of my sight. I just don’t have the quick head movement and rhythm that goes along with a hunter scanning open fields for deer.
This past spring we were headed to Kentucky for our fishing trip and I told myself I’m going to be the first to point out a deer. I didn’t mention this to my hunter. I wanted him to think I was interested in his passion for deer and helping him scan the open lay of the land.
An hour went by and I hadn’t seen one deer. Nor did my hunter. Another hour and nothing. I was quiet, sitting up straight and waiting in anticipation to be the first to see one. I tell you I scanned every open field and tree line we passed. By this time I was about to give up. I’m not a hunter, who cares if I see a deer or not, I was tired and needed a quick nap.
My hunter finally looks over and asked “Are you ok? You’re been really quiet and that isn’t like you.” “Yep, I’m fine. I just need a quick nap,” as I took one last look before I decided to close my eyes.
I was done scanning tree lines and open fields. I was done trying to impress my hunter with being interested in seeing deer. As I start to lean toward Mark and close my eyes … I feel … WHACK. He bopped me in the head with his arm as he quickly points out 5 deer and yells ”hurry look.”
I slowly looked up at him with the meanest look and said, “I was sleeping!”
For the next hour, I kept repeating to myself those damn deer, I’m never looking for deer again, he better not point out another deer, if I see a deer I’m not pointing it out, if he points out a deer I’m not looking, if we hit a deer I’m not getting out of this truck.
Have a great day all!

LOL..Oh Jody I can painfully relate to this story!!
My hunter is gifted ( I guess that is what I would call it) with being able to call many many animals with just his mouth.
So we may be riding down a road in deep conversation, and I will see him open his window and call a hawk, or ground hog, or turkey..whatever the mood, or animal is.
Inside, we listen to deer grunting, snorting, and turkey ALL year long!

That is funny Jody. I guess Mark just has more patient then you. Or maybe it is just because he had to stay awake because he was driving:):):)

My Dad does this too. I’ll be innocently sitting there and all of the sudden he’ll be pointing out a deer or something. I don’t know how he sees them. I guess maybe hunters are just more attuned to movement or something.
This made me laugh. Great story.

It was a day to write on the calendar when I spotted more deer than my husband did on a road trip to see his family… After that I gave up, I proved that I can do it - now I just let him show them to me

Maybe there’s a latent hunter inside me waiting to get out, because I love spotting deer along the road. It probably has more to do with the fact that I live in an urban area and sighting any wildlife gets me excited.

I thought for a minute you had plucked your story right out of my head! Very funny, and it’s nice to see other wives go through the same thing.
We live on the coast up in BC, Canada, where duck hunting is a big part of our community. So in addition to nearly getting my nose swiped off when hubby’s arm comes across to point out an antlered beast off to the side of the road, he ‘treats’ me to his prowess on the duck call at regular intervals.
When I finally pleaded the case for my hearing and the hearing our our kids (those calls are LOUD), he stopped doing this in the truck. Now he practices in the garage, but occasionally still surprises us in the house. Last time, he had to practically peel me off the ceiling when he startled me with his new Canada Goose rendition - and he did so with the glee usually reserved for 8 year old boys.
Men - gotta luv em.

My wife is always trying to spot more deer/animals/birds than I do. I think that is why she always lets me drive…

I still have a hard time spotting deer…..whenever I see a jack rabbitt I think it is a buck…until it hops away!
My husband can spot a deer (and a rattlesnake) I swear from a mile away!
