Simple Gardening - Vegetables
Having your own vegetable garden isn’t as hard as you might think. All you need is a sunny area for planting, lots of dirt and you can use plants or seeds. And with the cost of living rapidly increasing, having your own vegetable garden can be a great savings to your grocery bill.
Here is our garden before planting:

Our garden is about 18′ x 20′ . During the fall and winter months, when the garden is empty, Mark will put leaves and grass clippings into the garden. He then will turn the garden over a couple of times during the fall and spring prior to planting. All of our plants were started except for the green beans. We use seeds. The packaging should state how far apart to plant.
We planted:
Once your garden is in, give it a good soaking. About once a week or every other week you will need to watch for weeds.
We use no sprays and never seem to have a problem with insects or critters.
If you are thinking about starting a garden and have never done one before, start out small. Maybe try a few tomato plants.

I would love to have a garden. My only sunny spot is in the middle of the front yard. I guess I won’t have a garden again this year…

Our garden will be small this year…our new place has terrible soil - clay! Horrible stuff! So, we’ve done like you said and brought in some dirt and built boxes - but with limited funds to work with, it is small, indeed! But, we’ll enjoy the heck out of what we get!

Just planted 4 kinds of tomatoes, some multi-colored peppers, and eggplant. Will plant basil, sweet potatoes and who knows what else the gardening fever might put into my thoughts this year.
It is fun to share when the produce gets big enough eat.

Sorry Jody, I forgot to tell you how much I like your garden setup. I think it is really neat and functional. Contrary to mine which is just basically functional.

The first year my husband and I were married we planted a vegetable garden. It was so much fun to grow our own food and pick it straight from our yard. Ten years later, we are so busy with life and children that we have not taken the time to plant anything. Maybe this year we will start small and plant some tomatoes and squash. Thanks for the inspiration!

We just got out and planted a little bit today. I am hoping to maybe till up a part of my yard in the next few days and get a bit more planted. Your garden looks great. Looks like a lot of work to get that put in like that!

As I watched Mark do the gardening, it seems to come naturally and doesn’t seem like much work at all.

That is a cool garden setup. I like the nice border around it and wish I was that motivated to actually do something like it!
