Taking a Fish off the Hook: A Girl’s Guide
Written by: Arthur
Jody didn’t know what she was getting herself into when she politely asked me to guest blog for her last week. I love Jody’s blog and read it on a daily basis, because I think she just has a way of making normal everyday events very funny. I think all of you know her sense of humor and I think that is what draws most of us to read her blog. Hopefully she has a sense of humor when she reads this post!
I have read a few different posts where Jody has talked about her inherent fear of taking a fish off the hook. I know this fear was partially caused by a somewhat traumatic experience with a fish as a young child. I think many kids have been shy of taking fish off the hook after getting “poked” (those are Jody’s words) like she did, but I want all of you young ‘uns to know that there is hope. With my wife being the motivation for this post, I have come up with a few ways that you ladies out there can make taking a fish off the hook a little less traumatic, or maybe even get you out of taking it off the hook altogether.
- You can try using the power that you women have over guys. This is a family blog, so I’m not going to go into the details, but I think all of you ladies know what I’m talking about when I say “The Power”. The wife threatened me with that a couple of times when I wouldn’t remove a fish for her.
- Another option is begging. Usually a guy is a sucker for a sad face, and once you ladies use the sad face option on us we are more than likely going to remove the fish for you free of charge.
- If option no. 2 didn’t work, and option 1 has failed as well, you can always go with good old fashioned whining. Nothing can ruin a fishing trip faster than having to listen to your wife whine about how much she doesn’t want to take the fish off the hook. Us guys are more apt to help you lovely ladies if we get a good dose of whining for awhile.
- Option no. 4 would be to try and get a young boy who is in the boat to do it for you. Of course he might bait the hook for you as well. This option doesn’t work very well around my family because I think the young boys are more afraid of worms and fish then the ladies are. It is an option to try though if there is a young boy available to you at the time.
- Last, but not least, is my favorite option of all. If options 1-4 have completely failed and you must take the fish off yourself, try the sleeve option. This is where you pull your sleeve, whether short or long, down over your hand before commencing to take off the fish. This provides a “layer of protection” to prevent “poking” and is an option for a completely desperate woman in a boat who must take off a fish because her husband is now immune to options 1-4. It also provides some quality entertainment for the men in the boat as well.
Hopefully all of these tips will help the ladies out there who suffer from the dreaded “Taking the Fish off the hook without getting poked” syndrome. I know my wife has used them all to her advantage, but she is officially now at option no. 5.
I hope you have a great vacation Jody and I hope you know that I am only picking. All of you ladies are welcome to come fishing with me anytime. The wife can then show you her pattended sleeve move as well.

Arthur - I think I’m going to have to talk to your wife… I’ve been pretty successful with options 1, 2 and 3 - of course, I also fix my husbands lunch every morning too oh and I fold his clothes and put them away so I have a few more things to barter with than some - when pleasure fails as a motivator convenience almost always works

It has been 30 some years since my husband and I have gone fishing together. Wasn’t really a burning passion to accomplish. He did take the fish off the hook a few times, but told me if I was going to be going fishing, I would need to learn to do it myself…
In my younger days, my mother provided a fishing pole and the means to get to the fishing hole.
Been pretty much my experience if you want to do it, be “Self-Sufficient.”

What has happened to the women in this country? My grandmother used to whack the heads off of her chickens to feed the family, and I bet she took the fish of her own hook too.
Sounds like we have all gotten a little soft - the women for wanting the men to do it for them, and the men for allowing it to happen.
This is just another reason why you have to be careful about where you are looking for your soul mate - the mall or the farmer’s market. You decide

Arthur this was great, it made me laugh.
Just for the record, I don’t generally take my own fish off the hook. That’s mostly, however, because I go fishing with my Dad or my Uncle most often, and they indulge me.

I love going fishing with my family. When my boys were young they loved taking the fish off the hook for me. Now that they have moved away I ask my husband using tips 2 and 3. I just hope he hasn’t read this.
