The Hunter’s Wife - Remedies for the Common Cold
Thanks to everyone who left their comments on what to do for the common cold. I haven’t had a cold in a couple of years until this year. One of the keys is to keep your immune system strong by eating healthy fruits, vegetables and venison.
Here are some favorite remedies:
- Homemade chicken soup. This is actually my favorite. Not the stuff in the can that taste like metal.
- Warm fluids; Hot cinnamon tea, hot spiced cider, a glass of red wine and one of Mark’s favorite’s Presidente Brandy.
- Vitamin C, Goldenseal and Zinc lozenges. You can find these in any store. I prefer the brands from the health food store.
- WASH your hands, WASH your kid’s hands, WASH your spouse’s hands. I carry around sanitary wipes in my purse and wash down the grocery cart, the escalator rails at the mall or airport. Anything you touch in public. Door knobs are full of germs.
- A hot steaming shower or bath.
- And last but not least, REST. Get lots of rest. Tell everyone to go away for the day or lock yourself in your room and watch some of your favorite movies.
I am not a doctor, these are just some favorite remedies. If you are pregnant, have heart problems and the like, check with your doctor before taking any supplements or drinking a shot of alcohol.

These are some great tips! For hunters out in the field it’s also important to stay properly hydrated and fed so your body doesn’t weaken from the extra excursion and then become susceptible to a cold. I use Wilderness Athlete (www.wildernessathlete.org) products and they really do make a difference. The energy bars are loaded with vitamins and glucosamine which helps lubricate joints, while the hydration drink helps the body stay hydrated throughout the day and absorb oxygen faster when your worn out and tired. These products are great both in the field and for every day use, you don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to use these products!

Homemade chicken soup, tea and rest seem to usually work for me. The one I have a hard time with is rest. I’m not really good at sleeping, so I usually don’t get enough.

When I was just a little tike, a Doctor gave my Mom a recipe for a hot toddy. Bourbon, Honey, Lemon and some other nasty stuff. This was absolutely the nastiest stuff I’ve ever tasted!
Did it work? My Mom said it did. I don’t remember, I just remember how nasty the stuff was. I wouldn’t recommend it. Heck, with today’s culture, my Mom and the Doctor could be doing hard time for that!

Marc - I have never heard of Wilderness Athlete. I will have to check it out. Thanks for adding that tip.
Kristine - I have NO problem sleeping. I could sleep for 8 hours and then take a 2 hour nap when I get the chance.
Don - I had to laugh … Don’t you just love those home remedies. My family is from the south so we have lots of those.
Anyone choosing Don’s home remedy…do so at your own risk!
